The Story of Our School

Athens District High School is a small rural grade 7 to 12 school in the village of Athens Ontario.

Athens has always been proud of its heritage as an educational center. There has been a school in the community for over 160 years.

The original name of the village of Athens was Farmersville. In 1888, residents proud of their Grammar School, Model School (Teachers College) and Public School chose to rename their community Athens – which means β€œthe seat of learning.”

The high school has a lot to be proud of – including two successful Specialist High Skills Major Programs (Environment and Justice and Emergency Services), a new foods program, a strong presence of international students and a high graduation rate.

One of the most vibrant aspects of Athens is its Parliament system of student government. Since 1947 students have organized their student government based on the same structure and rules of order as the federal parliament. The effect is a remarkably equitable, efficient and accountable organization that has provided generations of students with the opportunity to have a voice and be involved.
